2022 Anime of the Year Awards – Winners

Anime Corner has been setting aside time for the last two years to honor the community’s favorite anime of the year, and for the first time, we expanded our yearly polls from one to 19 categories. The voting for the top 2022 titles concluded last week, and we are now ready to reveal the results. The data has been collected from more than 100,000 people, and the winners of Anime Corner’s Third Anime Awards have been chosen!

Before you continue, we’d like to remind you that the rankings below should not influence your decision to watch anime series that aren’t ranked highly. Each show has its own style, and everyone’s anime tastes vary.

Anime of the Year

This category received votes from 82,306 people, and the results are not surprising, but they are quite interesting. Attack on Titan has taken the top spot, with Bleach coming in second. The top four series ranked are all sequels, making Cyberpunk: Edgerunners the best new anime of 2022.

Anime Movie of the Year

This category received votes from 31,150 people, with a significant gap between the top two positions. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has taken the top spot, followed by The Quintessential Quintuplets‘ finale in the second and the newest One Piece film in the third.

Action Anime of the Year

This category received votes from 54,732 people, with Attack on Titan and Bleach again ranking first and second, as they did in Anime of the Year.

Adventure Anime of the Year

This category received votes from 27,548 people, with Ranking of Kings taking first place due to its ability to evoke strong emotions with little effort. With this one, you couldn’t help but root for Bojji.

Slice-of-Life Anime of the Year

The slice-of-life category received votes from 28,534 people, with My Dress-Up Darling taking first place and BOCCHI THE ROCK! coming in second. Both of these series have relatable characters and should be watched, along with the others on this list.

Original Anime of the Year

This category received votes from 24,359 people, with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners taking first place and Lycoris Recoil coming in second. It was a difficult one for both, and the difference is less than 4%. We’d also like to give Akiba Maid War an honorable mention. The series premiered in the fall of 2022, and from the first episode captivated it managed to captivate the audience with its unique take on yakuza movies.

Drama Anime of the Year

This category received votes from 29,336 people, with Attack on Titan reigning supreme once again, but now being followed by Classroom of the Elite’s second season. The top three positions in this one have a fairly large disparity, but they were all enjoyable.

Sports Anime of the Year

This category received votes from 17,658 people, with Blue Lock taking the top spot as expected. It aired in the fall of 2022, around the time of the FIFA World Cup, and the excitement about both was evident in these results.

Romance Anime of the Year

This category received votes from 42,305 people, with Kaguya-sama: Love is War – Ultra Romantic finishing first, followed by My Dress-Up Darling and Call of the Night. The top two were in a league of their own, and the vote percentage reflects that; however, others did not fall too behind.

Comedy Anime of the Year

This category received votes from 40,074 people, with SPY x FAMILY taking first place, followed by Kaguya-sama and BOCCHI THE ROCK!. The top three, as well as the other nominations, made us laugh a lot and are definitely worth watching if you like comedy shows.

Sci-Fi Anime of the Year

The sci-fi category received votes from 20,184 people, with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners in the strong lead, followed by Date a Live IV.

Mystery/Suspense Anime of the Year

This category received votes from 22,828 people, with Classroom of the Elite’s second season taking the top spot, followed by Summer Time Rendering and Tomodachi Game. They all kept us on the edge of our seats, and having to wait a week for a new episode was difficult, especially in Summer Time Rendering’s case.

Fantasy Anime of the Year

This category received votes from 26,734 people, with The Eminence in Shadow taking the first place, followed by Overlord IV. Eminence is still ongoing, and the weekly hype may have helped it gain ground, but Overlord fans will have something to look forward to soon as well.

Best Animation of the Year

This category received votes from 48,206 people, with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Entertainment District Arc and BOCCHI THE ROCK! finishing first and second, respectively.

The difference in votes between the top two positions is less than 0.15%, which is incredible given how different the genres are. All of the nominees delivered a unique animation style, which definitely made them more enjoyable to watch.

Best Adaptation of the Year

This category received 52,718 votes, with Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War taking first place, followed by Attack on Titan The Final Season: Part II. Like the Best Animation category, the difference between the top two positions is very small (0.27%), and it was a close call. Nonetheless, Bleach fans had waited so long for a sequel and were rewarded by the quality of the adaptation.

We were blessed with some incredible anime shows in 2022, and it appears that 2023 will deliver the goods as well. Let’s hope that this year achieves the same level of success and even more, and in the meantime, Anime Corner has already begun holding weekly polls for the Winter 2023 season.
